'The News from Lake Wobegon'

School starts the day after Labor Day. Children shop carefully at Skoglund's. The Magandanz boy, left LW to join the Coast Guard. He and his dad discussed the route. The tomato crop came in a rush and no one wants tomatoes. The terrible screeching noise all over town was Carl K tearing down Mr. Magnuson's old barn. The Town Council said it was an eyesore. In spite of its dilapidated condition, it took 2-1/2 days to tear it down. Carl tore it down for the hand-adzed square oak beams. Mr. Hacker built it a hundred years ago for his fine pair of horses. He lost his money in a stock panic. His house burned down and his wife died in the fire. He left town with his carriage and pair. The screech of the barn reminded GK of his 10th grade English class. Miss .Heinemann assigned him Shakespeare's 75th sonnet about death. The class snickered when he recited it because they didn't understand death. School is learning to love the world.

Other mentions/discussions during the show
