'The News from Lake Wobegon'

Children back in school after the Easter break. Grandparents recuperating from the grandchildren's visits. Virginia Inkvuist looked after two grandchildren. Yalmer worked late at the bank. Five-year olds ask hard questions like, 'Who's God?' Barbara's 2-year old nearly fell off the porch steps. Grandma Tollefsen turns off her hearing aid when her grandson practices guitar chords at 120 db. Selective ignorance is the basic principle of child raising. Jimmy Beelor had 20 friends over for his 15th birthday party. There was alarming music, jokes, and food consumption. Mr. and Mrs. Beelor were quarantined in the kitchen passing out food. Mr. Beelor crept in when everybody was quiet and then roaring with laughter. They were looking at the wedding album and laughing at his clothes and haircut. GK remembers like a poem the sounds and smells of fishing on LW at 4:00 am with Uncle Lawrence. Nothing you do for children is wasted.
