'The News from Lake Wobegon'

English teacher, Mr. Britt, drank a scotch and soda in the Sidetrack. His class voted him the most popular teacher. Ugh! He really wanted to be a poet. He took teaching to have something to fall back on. He never liked small towns. Bill, the barber, went on vacation and his 20-year old niece, Brenda, replaced him. The old guys often go in for conversation. Brenda thinks that everybody who drops in needs a haircut. You can eat off some heads. She gave Pastor Ingqvist a nice haircut and asked, 'What do you do?' He said, 'I'm a minister.' That satisfied her, but not David. It became his Sunday sermon. He remembered that he had to speak at the LW Leonards awards banquet. A funeral eulogy for an unpopular person, teaches you to talk to anyone. The Leonards lost 12 straight games. He didn't have time to write a speech so he told them about his basketball shot that gave the last game of the year to St. Anna's. We have fantasies about being winners. Instead he learned how bad that his teammates felt for him. GK remembers how angry everyone was with 'Wrong-Way' Ingqvist. Choosing between country and friends.
