'The News from Lake Wobegon'

Daryl Tolerude and his dad are building a new pig barn. They ripped out the footings twice because they were half an inch out. They hired Carl K because they weren't speaking to each other. Bud got out the plow but the snow melted too fast. He is a wiry old coot over 70. Esther talks about winters in Tampa but winter is Bud's challenge. He is General Patton in the lead tank. Tampa has nothing to push against. He believes in working and there's no loafing on his road crew. Deer hunters dress up and run around in the woods. Carl was hunting with his cousins but they were careless with guns. Carl shot the second deer because the first one was too tame. He did not want to be standing to close to her so he ran away. The deer kept up with him. He gave her two salted nut rolls and she walked away. He decided to either hunt or give up hunting. He shot a four pointer and hung it up in the garage. He forgot to tell Margaret about the deer and she threw the garbage about. She remembered that Carl jumped when he was nipped from behind.
