'The News from Lake Wobegon'

A foot of snow fell before Thanksgiving. Bud beat open the frozen garage door to get the plow. Parents wondered if the children would make it from The Cities. Worried telephone calls. Christine Inkvuist and her husband flew in from California with their three children. The plane landed in Sioux Falls and they waited for three hours. They phoned LW from Minneapolis and the weather was grim. They agreed to stay in Minneapolis and eat at the hotel. On Thursday morning, the streets were almost cleaned. They decided at the last minute to drive to LW and surprise the grandparents. They didn't call ahead first. Virginia had two Swanson chicken pies in the oven when everybody arrived. They made last minute macaroni and cheese. Grandma explained that at the first Thanksgiving, the Indians hated turkey so macaroni and cheese was something special. Every year, Virginia slaves over the turkey but Yalmer says the same grace about sustenance. The prayer was meant for macaroni and cheese and that's what they ate.
