'The News from Lake Wobegon'

It's been fiercely cold as low as 35 below. The wreckers were out starting cars early in the morning. It's vaguely embarrassing not being able to start your own car. It's a bonus if other people ask for help starting their cars. Winter narrows life down to a few simple problems like heat. You are prey and nature is seriously trying to kill you. As a child, GK walked a mile to school. He worried about wild dogs trapping him in the ravine. The remaining danger was the pump. He worried about putting his tongue on the long curved pump handle. 11-year old GK went to the MN State Fair and paid 25 cents to see the freak show, including the two-headed man, the anaconda, the alligator lady, Popeye, the fat lady, Mr. Chuckup, the wild man from Borneo, and the child who licked to frozen pump handle. GK might walk out from the theater and put his tongue on the iron fence.

Other mentions/discussions during the show
