'The News from Lake Wobegon'

Deer hunting season started this week. Deer's only natural predator is the automobile. Fish and mice are similar natural prey animals. We admire predators and call our football teams Lions, Tigers, and Vikings. Four cousins drove up to the old family hunting shack. Their fathers had used the same shack in the blizzard of 1940. Sheldon didn't hunt. He went berserk in the blizzard and blew the car horn until the battery went dead. The sound steered everybody back to the cabin. Sheldon was very quiet and never married. He worked as a proofreader and never married. When he died he left his money to his brothers. They were ashamed to spend his money because they had neglected him. They invested it in mutual funds for their kids. Twenty years later it was divided 18 ways and each kid got $95,000. Old Blue, the Labrador, hated Daryl, his owner. Daryl took him hunting, intending to shoot him. Daryl had to drag Blue. When Daryl stopped under a tree he found a not from his father written in the blizzard of 1940.
