'The News from Lake Wobegon'

Butchering chickens / The rain held up the harvest. The farmers told old jokes at the Chatterbox. Harold collapsed telling the punch line. Uncle Al went to the Chatterbox because he hates butchering chickens.·GK's family were at Aunt Flos to butcher 48 chickens. On chicken escaped. GK and his mother were town people and they feel self conscious about slaughtering chickens. Aunt Flo does not approve of store-bought chickens where you can taste the misery of the bird's upbringing. Aunt Flo went to a restaurant and got a Styrofoam chicken. GK's job was to catch and deliver the chickens to his dad. Dad cuts off the heads, Mom plucks the feathers and Aunt Flo cleans them. GK decided that it was only honest to kill one. He beheaded the chicken and it ran away down the block. GK and his father chased after. It ran past the Chatter Box just as Harold came out. Mrs. Mueller grabbed it and butchered it. GK and his dad met the live chicken that escaped. They found some sweet com and had sweet corn, beets and potatoes for supper.
