'The News from Lake Wobegon'

It rained last week. The chatterbox cafe was full of big hefty guys who wore loose-fitting clothes. This makes you bigger. Tight clothes make you smaller. Lyle, the science teacher, comes to the chatterbox cafe out of habit. He used to eat lunch there so he could smoke. Even though he has quit he still goes there for lunch. Lyle has been feeling bad because he got a letter in the mail that advised him he had been selected to be in minnesota’s, "Who's who in secondary education". The return address was in Escondido, Minnesota, and the form he filled out was an agreement to buy a copy of the book for $39. Life is not easy and if it weren't for the limited alternatives a person might want to try another form. Garrison talks about shaving and the abuse it does it does you over the years. #2 There was a lot of rain in Lake Wobegon this week, which led to a Chatterbox Café full of farmers drinking coffee. The farmers in Lake Wobegon are all big guys and wear large baggy clothes, allowing them to eat more. When Lyle, the science teacher, came down from school for lunch, there was no place for him to sit, so he had to take his order back to his classroom and eat there. He sat alone in the empty science class and stared at specimens in glass jars. He felt miserable but he didn’t know why. A week ago, Lyle got a letter from the Awards Committee for the Who’s Who in Minnesota Secondary Education. He took time to fill out many questions for the biography, and he went into great detail; then he saw the request for payment on the bottom of the form and he felt bamboozled. Middle-age decisions can depress men. Like the decision whether or not you should shave — using a dangerous weapon on your face every morning. A real dilemma. As you get ready each day, looking through the closet for clothes and then looking in the mirror, you see so many changes. It can be depressing. In the school men’s room, at the urinal, there’s a black tile where you can see your face reflected and see your dumb expression. You can try to change it while you stand there, but really if it feels good you usually look dumb. Well, this is what is on Lyle’s mind. His wife, Janice, noticed large hairy dust balls behind the couch as well as old moldy items in their refrigerator. Enough, she thought. She marshaled the family and they cleaned the house top to bottom. This cleared Lyle’s mind, even if it was only for a while.
