'The News from Lake Wobegon'

The Tolerude's Korean baby girl was baptized in LW Lutheran Church. It was packed because nobody wanted to be considered anti-Asian. LW people do right because of what people might think. The Sons of Knute trip to Florida didn't happen because nobody wanted to sign up until everybody else signed. On their last bus trip to St. Paul, they argued for half an hour about eating lunch at Woolworth's or McDonalds. Then they argued about where to meet after lunch. The Knutes are not at their best away from home. Their favorite trip is out to their ice houses. Mr. Berge is always the first to drive his pickup out on LW. They believe that it against the odds for him to break through since he was the last person to go through the ice. Pete Petersen had the most wonderful ice house with carpeting, electricity, TV, and a telephone. Ice houses have the smell of men at peace. Men sit and grunt to each other. GK would Jove to be there now. ------ The new Tollerud baby that came from Korea was baptized this week with the name of Karen. The church was packed for the baptism, so the minister was able to preach to a large crowd. It was a sermon about doing things for the right reasons, not about doing things to influence the thoughts of others. It was interesting that the Sons of Knutes stayed home for the baptism since they were supposed to head to Florida for the sweetheart weekend. To get the deal at the hotel, they needed 25 to sign up. This brought up memories of “interesting” trips to Seattle and then the big trip to Minneapolis. Passive arguments happen over restaurants, hotel rooms, and what to do. The Knutes just are not good travelers. They tend to look for the worst and they usually find it. The best trip is staying close to home and heading out to the Lake. Mr. Berge is the first to drive out on the icy lake. If he does it successfully, the ice houses go up. Walking into the ice house, you know from the smell that you have entered the man cave.
