'The News from Lake Wobegon'

Fr. Emil's sermon on birth control, 'If you did not want to go to Minneapolis, why did you get on the train?' GK visits the Minneapolis public library and looks at the Egyptian mummy. Kids learn about how babies are born. GK's sister says that he was left on the door step by gypsies and they'll be back to pick him up. He wanted to believe that God had planned everything. His friends at school told him that the kids were in line in heaven like gumballs in the machine. Daryl and Marilyn Tolerud decide to adopt a Korean orphan to add to their six biological children. The family went to a hotel in Minneapolis the night before. Waiting for the 4:30 pm 747 to arrive from Seattle. The nurse's badge said 'Tolerud'. The baby looked no Tolerud ever seen. ---- In Lake Wobegon this week, Father Emil delivered the annual short sermon on birth control: “If you didn’t want to go to Minneapolis, why did you get on the train?” This leads the host to remember literally going to Minneapolis as a child and seeing the Foshay Tower and other tall buildings and seeing the mummy at the Minneapolis Public Library. The Egyptian mummy was a memory that stuck with many of us and it led to many fantastical thoughts. Imaginations start with a falsehood and then minds develop interesting story lines. Children have many thoughts on how we came to be in this world — from being left by birds to being dropped off by gypsies. In fundamental Christianity, they teach that everything is predestined and things that happen have been planned out by the Maker. The host believed it for a bit but as time went on, he let his thinking take hold. He decided to believe that babies came down the shoot of a big gumball machine in order, and it's just by chance where you land. Daryl and Marilyn Tollerud decided they wanted one more baby (they have six) and they began research by reading lots of literature about adoption. They filled out the application and got word that a child was coming soon. The whole family decided to ride along and after a long wait, they joined six other families waiting for their little ones. They took this little bundle that flew from Korea and they thought she was an absolute angel.
