'The News from Lake Wobegon'

Elizabeth, the telephone operator, was upset over last week's broadcast. She said GK was blaspheming sacred items. GK reminded her that she told bible jokes. The LW school song. We always fall short of the ideals of truth and honor. Mrs. Bjornsen's bequest required the Thanatopsis Society to hire a lecturer each year. The lecturer tried to get people up the slope of higher learning with topics like: Books that Changed History. No one asked the real question, 'How much are you getting paid for this lecture?' LW people take pictures of aunts and uncles in front of Grand Canyon. LW children are born in a hospital 35 miles away. By the time Dad drives home to talk about the future. The parents just want to know the child's sex so they can go to bed. At the Christmas pageant at Our Lady, Sister Arvane gave Joseph the line, 'Is it a boy or a girl?' Father Emil made her take the line out. When Grandma died, everybody sat in her hospital room and took turns holding her hand. GK thought they should express profound thoughts. Finally the men started to whisper about gas mileage. GK was shocked but Grandma's life needed no comment.
