'The News from Lake Wobegon'

The Booster's Club finally put up the Christmas decorations, The Christmas tree in front of the statue of the Unknown Norwegian. The plywood star with 100 light bulbs was made by Mr. Mueller's Shop class in 1956. GK flunked Shop and was sent to Speech Class. He failed Speech but there was nowhere else to go. LW Catholics hold off decorating until the day before Christmas. Father Emil gives up his nightly shot of brandy for weeks before Christmas. Clarence Bunsen bought him a bottle of brandy but Father Emil declined a shot. Clarence said, 'You only live once.' Father Emil said, 'No you don't.' Pastor lnkvuist and Father Emil both preached against materialism. You should have heard Pastor Tommerdahl's sermon on the true meaning of Christmas. When GK was 12, he couldn't afford extravagant presents. He had $8 to buy 12 gifts. Then he spent $3 on a Swank shaving kit for dad. He had just 45 cents each to spend on 11 people. He hoped for a miracle dimes and quarters. Finally, he bought everybody a little bottle of Swank cologne. His dad loved the gift but it was too good for every day. Most was left 30 years later.
