Bunsen, Richard

'The News from Lake Wobegon'

Richard Bunsen left LW for Mexico 15 years ago. He came back as Don Ricardo wearing a red serape. He's pushing 70 but he's lean and wiry with salt and pepper hair and he looks terrific. He came on Monday, saw everybody he wanted to see in two days and left. He stands on his head for ten minutes every morning and night and walks about five miles a day. He looks good because he eats beans and raw vegetables. The Bunsens sat for hours looking at his of slides and they were sorry when the show was over. Don Ricardo told Clint and Clarence that they should move to Mexico and make a new life for themselves. He left on Wednesday night. On Thursday morning, it snowed. Irene huddled up to Clint and they slept in late. Irene said it will give her tomato plants more time to get started. She has 20 little plants on the kitchen table. Last year, Irene had the champion tomato in LW until it fell off and split in two. This year she is raising Big Boys bred for stem strength. Irene used to have bad luck with her plants but last year her luck changed. She pointed to a sample that said, "Prayer changes things." Bud is trying to break the snow plow. The town council refused to buy him a new plow. He plows the street in front of the council member's houses and bangs the blade, trying to break it. Irene told Clint to sell the house so they could move to Mexico. Clint said you can't sell a house in LW. Clint walked to work and said, "Good morning" even though no one was there. Once he saw his father who had been dead for 15 years sitting at the desk.
