'The News from Lake Wobegon'

Father Emil woke up from his nap with a feeling of dread. He dressed warmly to check out what might have happened. He asked at the Chatterbox and Dorothy joined him. They alerted Ralph's Pretty Good Grocery. Old Mrs. Inqvist said, "It's at the school." They evacuated the children out into the snow. Somebody said, 'It's gas.' Father Emil finally came to his senses and said, 'Let's go into the school.' He led a prayer of thanksgiving. The old boys at the Sidetrack thought it was a great joke. People went to the school because it was first in their worries. People die in cold weather and the little children's choir sing the Dies Aria. People died at home with friends holding their hand. The dying would think of last words. After talking in hushed tones for a while, people would talk normally. A little boy threw up in class. Sister Pierre asked the 4th grade who wanted be nurses. Two little girl volunteers cleaned up the mess.
