'The News from Lake Wobegon'

There are no street lights in LW. It's very dark for the children that go trick or treating. The children imagine a sick old cougar up in the trees, waiting to jump down on them. Deborah Olsen is the Halloween Queen. There's something ghostly about the Olsen family. Grandma Olsen was reputed to be a witch. She could jump up on to the dining room table from a standing start. The children said that she could fly. An Olsen boy fell in love with a waitress at the Chatterbox who had a very low cut blouse. He took her to a movie and then they parked in the dark. Just as he was reaching to touch her cleavage, the grain elevator blew up. Crazy Harold Olsen came over at the tum of the century. The Olsen family were pacifists. They settled on 80 acres of rocky sandy terrible land. It was no good for raising corn. They worked like beasts tearing out roots and hauling away the rocks. The farm still failed. The six boys became old very quickly. Harold had a talent for playing the violin. His father told him not to work in the fields so that his hands would not be crippled. Harold felt guilty about not working in the fields. He went to the tavern and played for nickels, dimes and whiskey. He sold his fiddle for $25.00 and then he left town. He came back 40 years later. He became a Norwegian Bachelor Farmer and raised pumpkins and wheat. On Halloween, he went into town and became drunk. He was walking home late at night and he lost his way. He came to his father's farm. There was the wreck of the old home and the family cemetery. As he walked home he felt that there were people - ghosts walking beside. They started to sing to him in Norwegian. The hymn went "Farther On." He realized that they were forgiving him. He went back to the bar and really got drunk. / It's Halloween in Lake Wobegon, a time when people walk around holding hands and scare each other with just their imagination. Deborah Olson is the Halloween queen and the story how her Grandma and Grandpa came to settle in Lake Wobegon and why most thought she was a witch and he was crazy.

Other mentions/discussions during the show

The druids believed that spirits of dead people returned on Halloween. Two spirits still live in the World Theater. They reappeared when it ceased to be a movie theater. The November 7 show will be from the World Theater and will feature the Jean Redpath.
