'The News from Lake Wobegon'

GK visited LW for the Memorial Day service before leaving for Denmark. It was delayed while a Knute went home to replace a shoe lace. Bob Bowser finally got rid of the '55 Mercury in his back yard. Clint Bunsen put a hook on it but the bwnper tore loose so he pushed it to the town dwnp. Mr. Berge told GK about the man who went to Denmark and died after a week. Wally told him about people who leave and then realized that they had made a mistake. Wally is a bartender and therefore conservative. GK is a romantic and believes in possibilities. If they had asked GK to speak at LWHS commencement, he would have told the graduates that life is far more dangerous than you expect. You survive failure and become a different person and you notice other people. GK started his course of failure at age 17. He drove his father's car off the road. Later he drove it into the creek. He got 12 Fs one year in college. On HS graduation day, GK rode the grain bucket in the grain elevator to the top in the dark and it nearly tipped over. PHC is like the trip in the grain bucket.

Other mentions/discussions during the show

Theater: Buster and friends walk from St. Paul to Denver. The overhead tram car collapses. GK reads Walt Whitman poems.
