'The News from Lake Wobegon'

Wally bought a 26-foot long pontoon boat with deck chairs, BBQ, and a 36 hp outboard. To Wally, she was the Lusitania. He and Evelyn were cruising around the lake. He called it the Agnes D. Mayor Clint Bunsen suggested that Wally take out the 25 visiting Lutheran ministers on a seminar on rural communitiesin crisis. They rolled into town on a yellow school bus at 5:30 pm. They walked down to the lake and filed out onto the Agnes D. Clint noticed that as the last minister climbed aboard that it was riding rather low. Wally gunned the motor and headed out onto the lake at 2 mph. Everyone knew that there were too many Lutherans aboard. Pastor Inqvuist thought that the Agnes D was sinking. Then the BBQ grill started to throw sparks. Five ministers tried to pour water on the BBQ. At that point, 8 Lutheran ministers fell of the front, removing ballast. Then the BBQ tipped over and every jumped overboard into water 5 feet deep. Their faces were lifted upward. They stood there not knowing where shore was. They cried out for help in baritone voices. A small boy showed them the shallows. Later, they said it was a wonderful experience.
