"I did a show in Frankfort, Kentucky, last night and was on stage, yakking about this and that, and recalled a hymn from my long-ago youth, and hummed a note and sang, “When peace like a river attendeth my way---” and the audience picked it up and sang it, four-part harmony, softly, a capella, from memory, “It is well, it is well with my soul,” and in the larger scheme of American culture in 2023, this was entirely irrelevant and insignificant and it also was stunningly beautiful. A small community was formed, like the V of migrating geese maintained by honking, except we didn’t honk, we harmonized. So onward we go, flapping our wings."
