'The News from Lake Wobegon'

Rocky Top is the LW cemetery. It's hard to dig graves. One winter night, Bud got frustrated with the rocky frozen ground and blasted out a grave with a stick of dynamite. Last week was Memorial Day. Many children died of the epidemics. Some of the LW pioneers had planned to go to Oregon but they didn't quite make it. GK's father would say, 'There's always Oregon,' when things in LW would go wrong. GK was a middle child. He had to work in the garden before he could play. At age 12, he didn't like playing with the little kids. He would read about far-off places. His father told him that the family had nearly gone to Portland about the time GK was born. The predestination theory said that the souls were all arranged in a line and you were whoever was next when your parents conceived. At 5:00 pm, Mrs Diener called her children in exactly the same order.
