'The News from Lake Wobegon'

There's no snow and LW looks poorly. Boys are floating chunks of ice in the pond in the alley pretending that they're boats. Some back yards would look better covered with snow. LW is worried because there's no snow. Clint and Irene Bunsen bought the first cordless telephone in LW. Clint put it down and lost it. He phoned his number to find it. (section of poor audio} Mr. Berge picked it up and it chirped at him. He answered it and Clarence told him that he had Clint's telephone. Mr. Berge had been at the Sidetrack Tap for too long. He took out the garbage and lost the telephone. Rick, the TV dog, ate a chicken pot pie.and was thrown out of the house. He went down the alley on his garbage route, looking for friendship. He sat in the middle of the street. Florian Krepsbach honked his horn at him. Nobody honks horns in LW. Rick was humiliated. GK felt like that in the Third Grade on Valentine's Day. The Valentine's Box was on Mrs. Myer's desk. She wrote questions about St. Valentine on the blackboard. GK wondered if anybody would write a Valentine to Gary of their own free will. Mrs. Myers had fat on her arms. The kids had given the fat names. GK had only received four Valentines the previous year. He lied and told his mother that he had a sore throat so that he could stay home. He was lying in bed feeling sorry for himself. Jim came with an envelope with 30 Valentines cards from his classmates. Then he noticed that his name was written on top of the previous name. Rick heard a chirping from Mr. Berge's garbage can. He turned the can over but the chirping stopped. Clint found his telephone a few days later. When GK was 14, a girl asked him to walk to the library with him. He was dazed with pleasure walking hand in hand.
