'The News from Lake Wobegon'

It's 20 below. Borrowing father-law's car to use jumper cables. All of their neighbors look at you. This is more entertaining than any TV show. Bud walks into the Chatterbox after he's spent three hours chopping ice off of the water tower. He's completely alive. Nature is saying, 'Die!' The body wants to live. GK went up to LW to see Dr. Dehaven. GK hit the bump entering LW and his head hits the roof. Everything is about the same at Dr. Dehaven's office. He came out about as usual and went over to the Sidetrack to toast his good health. The old guys sit in the Sidetrack and argue about things like Mexican Central Time. They have a lot of time to waste so they don't want answers. If God made a pronouncement in the Sidetrack, they would argue with him. Someone said that Mary Jo was real sick and expected to die. GK went up to see her. He hoped she had forgotten the time that he stood her up instead of taking her to the school dance. He couldn't think of an apology so that they never talked. Mary Jo wasn't sick, but her brother, Lester, died a year ago. Mary Jo would not let him into the house. GK had always disliked Lester. By 7:30, it was time to go to the basketball game. The Leonards passed the ball to Eric Tolerude who faked a drive and made a bank shot. It was a beautiful shot even though the Leonards lost. GK remembers that shot from his basketball days. Time stops. Then the ball bounced off the rim and missed. GK remembers winter days with his grandmother singing while she was baking bread.

Other mentions/discussions during the show

Roy Blount telephones in his act. The fly to Hawaii and are attacked by huge half-naked men. James Marshal discovers gold in California. How does our mind really work? The earth is really flat and there will be a hole to China near LW.
