'The News from Lake Wobegon'

A moose showed up in Roger Hedlund's corn field. Roger was picking corn and the moose was as big as Roger's tractor. The moose lost interest and went over the hill. Nobody in the Sidetrack believed Roger. Paul Wither's and the Boy Scout troop planted a row of trees that turn red every fall. After a month, Clifford's oldest boy, Cliff Jr., dropped out of his freshman year and came home in the white car his parent's gave him. He hadn't attended any classes. He and his mother discussed how to explain this to his father. Cliff had been smoking pot. A day and a half passed and his car was towed away. His apartment was a mess and the electricity was turned off. The trunk of his car was full of dirty dishes and clothes. He's back home among people who love him. The LW high school board met and there was a big crowd. People noticed the crowded parking lot was half full and more people kept coming. They finally held the meeting in the gymnasium. Mr. Halvorsen had a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach. His wife, Phyliss, bought a used wok and has been working her way through the wok cookbook. Roger does not like tofu. There were 312 people sitting in the bleachers. Roger Hedlund explained that the item to be discussed was only under consideration. They were considering pairing LWHS with District 703. This would the Millet HS. Nobody cares about their kids in Millet. The kids eat Rice Krispies for supper watching TV in a filthy house while their parents hang out in the bar. Jokes about Millet. It was a hard meeting. It would have been a great moment for a crooked politician. Everybody went to the cafeteria and stood around drinking coffee. Clarence was walking at 9:30. He saw a few boys playing football.
