It's below zero. Everyone is bundled up in heavy clothes. People used to carry hot rocks to keep warm. People keep warm with flannel cloths with Vick's Vaporub. It's not a commercial product. It comes from the Lutheran Church. School was dangerous if you hadn't done your homework. Donald Hoaglund would threaten to get GK. GK raced home ahead of Donald Hoaglund and jumped over the manure pile in three long leaps. Donald took two leaps and was stuck in the middle of the manure on one foot. His boot had come off the other foot. GK should have gone out to help him but he thought that the Lord had put Donald in this position. Donald threatened GK who got a fever and stayed in bed for two days. Worry about icicles and snow leopards in Minnesota that eat little kids who step in the wrong places. GK loves Vick's. --- “O Little Town of Lake Wobegon, how still we see thee lie.” It’s so quiet because people are hunkered down in their homes. If folks wanted to make noise, it would be tough because they are so bundled up that the sound wouldn’t make its way. Back in the day, folks carried warm rocks in their pockets. The main way people kept warm was Vicks VapoRub — being in bed with Vicks on your chest all wrapped in flannel. What a good memory! The host remembers all of the dangers of childhood, which included unfinished homework (which in turn brought on illness) and the bully Donald Hoaglund. Fear makes one feverish. One time in particular, Donald was chasing him through the yard and across the septic tank field. Back in the day, you covered your septic tank field with manure so it didn’t freeze. As Donald chased him through the deep of it, the bully lost his boot and there he stood like a flamingo. The host wondered if he should help or teach him a lesson. There are so many terrifying memories of childhood, like fearing being eaten by a snow leopard. One can’t be too wary.
GK describes hill rolling tournaments. GK apologizes for going to San Francisco for a few days. Giving a flock of sheep for Christmas.
