'The News from Lake Wobegon'

Ella Anderson, an old woman with a bad hip, is cleaning up her garden.. She stands up because she's afraid if she sits down, she won't be able to get up and have to call for help. The neighbors would tell her daughter, Charlotte, and there would be a family meeting. Ella would like more visitors. She's been cooped up all winter with Henry. Sometimes he goes out of his mind. He thinks he's riding the Burlington 'Zephyr from Chicago to St. Paul in 1917. Ella tells him the stops in the right order because Henry remembers them exactly. Only Ella can give Henry this trip. If Charlotte were there, it would be an emergency and she'd call a doctor. Ella keeps 1917 open for Henry. Visitors keep 1984 open for her. Charlotte is 55 and worried sick about her health. Ella isn't worried about health. She talks about death as if it were normal. Death would give her a hand up. Pastor I visits her every Monday and gives her home delivery of his sermon. Pastor Ingqvist's lawn is in terrible shape. The Beelor boy, Sonny Jim, cranks it out on his 10 watt Stratocaster guitar.
