'The News from Lake Wobegon'

People collect different things. GK's mother collected canned tomatoes, Reader's Digests, National Geographies, and cloth to make braided rugs. GK collected the author's cards that came with jaw breakers. He became an author at age 8, when he found that his mother had saved all of his work sheets from school. He started writing one-page stories about magic. He wrote in bed at night on a red Indian Chief tablet. He wrote one-page magical stories with colored pencils to indicate the mood of the stories Then he started writing funny stories. He admired his Uncle Jack who said funny things. Boogers were the only funny thing that GK knew. He would substitute 'booger' for a word in a movie title He passed his booger stories around the classroom. Donald laughed and Miss Lewis caught him. He fingered GK. Miss Lewis made him stand in front of the blackboard. He stood there and suffered until he noticed that Miss Lewis' shoes squeaked. GK's friends did not look at him. GK pretended to pull a long one out of his nose. The kids who laughed were punished. We look for talking shoes.
