'The News from Lake Wobegon'

Duane Bunsen called from Alaska to explain why he would be arriving home late. Arlene wasn't aware that he was due home. She worries much less about him than she did about the first three kids. She read an article about, 'How good is your marriage?' She went in to Clifford's to buy a pair of glasses. Clifford has the shoe store but he also sells glasses. He has only granny glasses or young miss glasses. He said that every pair looked good on Arlene, really saying, 'You're 55, what does it matter?' If you're Lutheran in LW, you have to buy glasses from Clifford. GK got his first pair of glasses from Clifford when he was 8. Arlene takes her glasses on and off depending on whether she wants to see or be seen. Myrtle, the beautician specializes in practical permanents. Arlene took up running last week. She runs up to the dump and back. Everyone stops to offer her a ride. Old Mrs. Inqvuist says getting old is not for the timid.
