America the Beautiful Tour. "It was a good week on tour out West and I was moved by the show in Spokane last night, a big boisterous crowd in the Fox Theater, singing with Heather Masse and Christine DiDiallonardo is always a highlight of my tedious literary life, hitting the high notes on Van Morrison's "The Beauty of Days Gone By" and the Grateful Dead's "Brokedown Palace" and "I Will Take You Home," but most of all by wandering in the audience during intermission and after the show and saying hello to people. I was exhausted but I owed it to them. You do a radio show for all those years and you just keep plugging ahead and it doesn't dawn on you until it's all over how much you mean to some people. An invisible friendship. . They told me about their families gathered around a radio on Saturday nights listening to the show together and it brings tears to my eyes. I am a fortunate man, more than I realize. My impression of Spokane, from the waitress at the Magnolia Cafe this morning to the Uber driver to the Delta agent and the TSA people and the lady at the coffee joint in the airport is that this is the friendliest city in America. I maintain that cheerfulness is a choice and Spokane has made its choice."
