GK called back for news and they reminded him of Jimmy Lukenmeyer, who loved to be the center of attention and learned to tell lies. He drives around the country in a red 1982 Pontiac, giving speeches at high schools about his fictional life. They tell GK to keep moving so no one can check his references. The bench in front of the Side Track is home for LW's celebrities. Mr. Anderson, the English teacher, was the celebrity in LW when GK was young. He was the first sophisticate that GK ever knew. He had been to NYC and had liked it. In LW, he talked about spending $15.00 for dinner in NYC for a dinner for two, confirming local opinion that teachers were overpaid. He broke the unwritten rule for teachers and went into the Side Track during the day. He confided in GK and told him the he was different. He showed him a picture book of NYC, the program from a Broadway play, and the menu from the Chinese restaurant that served the $15.00 meal. In LW, Saturday supper was leftovers. K's mother put newspapers on the kitchen floor to save the shine.
Scott Fitzgerald and Dave Winfield are Minnesotans who made it big in NYC.
