'The News from Lake Wobegon'

The Bunsen's talk all the time about weather. Their 17-year old son wishes that they could be sophisticated like the Flambeau family in the novels that he reads. Tina Tolefsen went to college. She gave the correct answers to the guy next to her and he went on to become a successful lawyer. They have a happy marriage. All of their kids have grown up and 'moved out except the youngest. Tina got a call from he mother. Could she look after Uncle Ed for two days and take him to the hospital in Minneapolis for a serious operation. Uncle Ed is a very old NBF who cultivates 80 acres of wheat with two black Belgian horses. He arrived in his 40-year old blue wool suit, frightened to death. She hugged him and gave him a drink of brandy. He slept that night in the chair because the bed was too big for him. The next day he fell asleep in the chaise lounge while Tina held his hand. She remembered visiting him as a very small girl. He lifted her up on the back of the huge Belgian horse. She was afraid. Then he let her hold the reins of the hay rack. Now the roles are reversed and the operation is the huge Belgian horse. She decided to take him out for a night on the town. They went to the so" floor of the tallest building and looked at the view. Then they went to a fancy restaurant. He was out of place, spoke too loud and complained about the food. But Tina just carried on with a monolog about all of the people they knew in the old days. Her husband was embarrassed but if anyone stared at Tina, she stared right back. The next day, he went to the hospital for the operation. Afterwards, the doctor gave him six months to a year to live. When he got home, the horses were waiting. They knew that something was wrong and they had not eaten. He fed them and spoke to them in Norwegian. He said that the city was a hell hole but that there were a few nice people. He said he was going to get a night's sleep and the next day, they would cultivate.
