'The News from Lake Wobegon'

Florian Krebsbach came out of the Sidetrack Trap and was hit by the Deener boy on his 10-speed. He expected Florian to yell at him but Florian has been waiting for something terrible to happen to him. That's guilt. GK was lucky to rear-end a guilty person. The Deeners redecorated their living room and found the body of the dead cat in the wall. Lyle Jansky has plenty of guilt. Coming home from a conference on chemical dependency in St. Paul, he noticed that he was smoking. He threw the cigarette and the pack out of the window. He went back but he couldn't find the pack. While he was searching the house for cigarettes late at night, he ran into his daughter, Becky. They drove to the emergency room. Lyle felt so guilty and he stopped smoking for Lent. His whole body craves cigarettes. He runs for exercise. ---- A week ago as Florian Krebsbach was walking out of the Sidetrack Tap, the Diener boy was whizzing by on his bike. He knocked Florian right off his feet. No more came of it, but the Diener boy thought that story would make it through town and he would be in trouble. Florian remembers when he left Myrtle at the truck stop and he too expected everyone to be mad at him, but that didn’t happen. The host recalls once being preoccupied while driving and bumping into the fender of a woman's car. And instead of being angry, she just let it go. He believes that this forgiveness comes from our own guilt. Lyle Krebsbach lives in a world of guilt. His current streak of guilt stems from when he was driving home from Minneapolis, returning from a conference on chemical dependency. He was hoping to be one day become a one-on-one counselor rather than a classroom teacher. He was daydreaming about a young fellow coming into his office needing help with a smoking habit, and then Lyle got a whim to throw his own pack of cigs out of the window. Quickly he turned around to look for them along the road. No luck. He went home and scurried around searching everywhere for just one. Nothing. In the flurry in the dark of night, he didn’t notice his little daughter and he knocked her right into the radiator. She was bleeding so badly, they had to race to the hospital. Mavis, Lyle’s wife, finally asked what happened and he confessed that he was looking for a cigarette. GUILT! Yes, guilt led him to give up smoking.
