'The News from Lake Wobegon'

GK had trouble telephoning home to LW. The message said 'The number that you have called does not exist." The Coleman Survey was very slipshod. They did much of their surveying sitting in a tavern. They did not LW in the survey. When the government screws up, they say that you've been "Colemaned." GK ran out of gas driving up to LW. All of the idiot lights lit up and said "Idiot." GK did not notice because he was talking to himself, answering reporter's questions. He is always a loser in his fantasies. The Minnesota North Stars hockey team asked GK to drop the puck in the opening game. He bought a puck and rehearsed in his living room. Watching celebrities screw up the first ball in a baseball game. GK forgot that he had to walk across the ice. There was a microphone in the middle of the rink. The possibilities for disaster were even greater. A tall woman in skates escorted him to the center. He dropped the puck and was escorted back to the side. He still thinks of what he might have said. It's interesting to be a public. GK met Studs Terkel 25 years ago on a program on Station WLT called "The Best Years of Your Life." The tower was down in a valley so the signal did reach Minneapolis - St Paul. The plot involved a rich and famous person who was stranded in Millville. They encountered a simple rural person and learned a basic lesson. They invited the rural person to come to Hollywood. This was always resolved with the simple person deciding to stay. In the program with Studs, GK dropped the script and missed three pages. At the end of the program there were four minutes left and GK had ad lib including naming the towns in Minnesota..

Notes and References

The Auditorium Building in Chicago is one of the best-known designs of Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler. Completed in 1889, the building is located at the northwest corner of South Michigan Avenue and Ida B. Wells Drive. The building was designed to be a multi-use complex, including offices, a theater, and a hotel. As a young apprentice, Frank Lloyd Wright worked on some of the interior design. The Auditorium Theatre is part of the Auditorium Building and is located at 50 East Ida B.
