The lineup for the 4th of July Parade. There is a platoon of three abreast pickup trucks followed by the winner of the 7th grade essay contest, followed by the pet parade, followed the horses. Then comes the Living Flag. It takes about 20 minutes to get everyone lined and then Clint takes a Polaroid picture. Two 16-year old girls in shorts and tank tops lit up cigarettes. Two 17-year old boys from Millet arrived. Then came the picnic and the baseball game. Finally there is the fireworks display. Two pontoon boats lashed together. Elmer's brother-in-law George had drunk a six-pack. They were laying out the fireworks in sequence, when Elmer lit them prematurely. The biggest rocket went off first. The next two rockets went off horizontally. Then all of the fireworks went off at once. The committee dove into the water. Janice was in the car with the boy from Millet. He asked her to go of to a cabin. The pontoon boat blew up and Janis leaped out of the car. Everybody looked for George, who was missing. They called the sheriff. Elmer cruised back and forth looking for him until 2 am. Then he drove home and found George asleep on the sofa. Janis realized that her father had been on the pontoon boat. She ran to the water and found him still alive. The boys from Millet headed back home. Three days later. George enlisted in the army.
